Santo Domingo

I’ve visited the Dominican Republic several times before but had only visited Punta Cana while sitting poolside at an all-inclusive resort. This time I wanted more of a cultural experience. I wanted to really explore and learn about Dominican food, music and the people. I stayed a total of 10 days and visited 3 cities: Santo Domingo, Samana and La Romana.

We arrived in Santo Domingo on a direct American Airlines flight from Miami and then jumped in an Uber to the apartment. A $7usd ride for a 30 min trip!

Stay

I booked a beautiful Airbnb for 8 days located in the Zona Colonial area. A walled in city built in the 1400’s. Lots of cafes, restaurants and bodegas. The neighborhood is gorgeous and the locals were very friendly. Lots of parks nearby and the apartment complex had 24-hour security.

If I ever go back to Santo Domingo, I’m definitely staying here again!

The cost was $426.00 for 8 nights

Half Day Tour

On our first day we took a half day walking tour Sights & Bites around the city center. We booked with Luis through Airbnb experiences and he took us to pastry shops, cafes, fruit stands and spice stalls. I tasted some of the best fruits! He was very knowledgeable and took us through the heart of everyday life in Santo Domingo. The tour was 3 hours.

The cost $50 per person. Well worth the time and money!

That evening which happened to be my birthday, we went to one of the best restaurants in town.  Meson de la Cava, it is set in an old cave, it’s extremely sexy and great for pictures. I had 2 large langoustines drenched in garlic and butter. I don’t have a picture because I was starving and went right in but definitely hit up this restaurant when you visit and have the langostines!!

 Full Day Tour

The following day we met up with Angie, Discover Playa Rinconalso through Airbnb experiences, where she drove us 2 1/2 hours North to Samana. We passed through the countryside and saw a more rural and untouched side of the island. She took us to a remote, or what she calls “wild” beach and we practically had the whole place to ourselves. We ate the most delicious lunch right on the beach prepared to order. She had everything arranged nicely. I would recommend anyone with some time to explore and adventure off, to definitely do this all day tour. The cost $159 per person

We ended up becoming great friends with Angie and she recommended a hair salon Hermanos Duenos, where I had THE best Dominican blowout! She also recommended a great hangout spot when visiting Boca Chica beach The Sporting Club, she even made us a reservation. We rented a cabana at the Club and had delicious food and drink right on the beach. A few days later, she drove us to the town of La Romana which is about an hour and half from Santo Domingo. We asked if she would take us to the next leg of the trip rather than pay an Uber, we hired her.

We enjoyed her company and hope to see her again.

We stayed at the world renowned luxury resort for 4 nights with a beautiful suite facing the expansive golf course. The Teeth of the Dog, the name of this stunning course, was the backdrop to a magnificent stay. Words can’t even describe how massive this property is. It holds a resort, villas, million dollar homes, an Italian city (Altos de Chavon) and every guest is given a golf cart during their stay to get around as you please.

This resort is not for those watching their dollars. I spent more money in the four days then I spent my entire week in Santo Domingo. To give you an idea of cost, every sit down meal was no less than $100 for 2 people. Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner.

Seriously expensive. Thank goodness we were only there for the few days and I got the deal through Travelzoo.

The deal included: free breakfast (the bill was still $100 and they take it off when you check out)

$100 off massage
$100 resort credit
$100 restaurant credit (which you know we used!)

Even though it was pricey, it was worth the most beautiful resort experience I’ve ever had. We explored the grounds every day and swam in their 4 pools and beach and dined at 4 of their delicious restaurants.

The weather was perfect in June (the Caribbean’s off season) a little rain on and off but a welcome to the sometimes very warm days.

I had such an amazing time and recommend a visit to the Dominican Republic.
